Achieving disability inclusive employment – Are the current approaches deep enough?

Diverse approaches to promoting disability inclusive employment aim transform workplaces into truly environments, usually with intervention strategies targeting two main groups: employers and jobseekers disabilities. However, they do not always consider other relevant stakeholders or address the relationships interactions between diverse actors in wider social ecosystem. These often neglect deeper ‘vexing’ difficulties which block progress towards work environments. Most interventions rightly embrace hegemonic ‘social models of disability’ use human rights arguments but may entrenched structural factors. Disability is complex, unaddressed invisible aspects that continue limit progress. We explore some key concepts then interrogate evidence from ‘Inclusion Works’ programme working four middle- low-income countries, considering intractable barriers underlying slow movement employment. Finally, we propose a more participatory action orientated approach involving disabled people others needed both generate understanding provide pathways new solutions obstinate problems through progressive learning processes context.
